Here, it's Republican Danny Lewis, a candidate for Miller County treasurer.
Note: TREASURER.
According to reporting in the local newspaper, he's filed bankruptcy, been subject to a foreclosure action, had a lien placed on his house over a debt and was late paying real estate and personal property taxes from 2003-2010. (I'd be sympathetic if he wasn't an Obamacare-hating Republican. His bankruptcy was taken to avoid paying large medical bills. Thanks to all who paid bills at his health care institutions so as to make up the money lost when he defaulted.)
But back to all those late tax payments. From the Texarkana Gazette:
Lewis said his financial challenges are no reflection on how he would manage the treasurer’s office.“Those are my taxes, and they were paid, delinquent or not. When I pay my taxes is nobody’s business. It’s my taxes,” he (Lewis) said.
Lewis also gave the greatest late payment excuse I've seen: It's a good thing he paid taxes late because the penalties gave the county extra revenue, he said. Maybe as elected treasurer he'll encourage ALL taxpayers to deadbeat. And the longer the better so those penalties will really pile up. Perhaps he'll also take steps to stop publication of delinquent taxpayers. It's "nobody's business," after all, no matter what the statutes might say.
